Booting from CD

Begin by Booting the Suspect Computer with BitFlare

Begin with the suspect computer turned off. Put the BitFlare CD into the PC's CD drive and turn the computer on. Setting a PC to boot from the CD may require minor changes to the computers BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) configuration. The procedure for doing this can vary based on manufacturer and model. We have provided general instructions for performing the changes. The procedure should be similar for most computers. However, it may be necessary to contact the manufacturer or IT support personnel to get specific instructions.

If the PC does not automatically boot from the BitFlare CD upon start up, you may need to change the boot sequence in the computer's BIOS. To do this, restart the computer. When the initial screen comes up (before Windows starts to load) look for a message that says "Press [key] to enter BIOS Setup". Press the key specified in the message. If the Windows load process has already started before you press the key, you will need to restart again and note the date and time in which this occurred.

When the BIOS Setup screen appears, use the commands described at the bottom of the screen to move the cursor to the "Boot" or "Boot Order" option on the menu. If these options are not shown, you may need to look for them in the other menus listed.

Once you have entered the boot menu, you will see a list of devices. The computer will try to boot from those devices in the order listed. If the internal hard disk is listed first, the CD drive containing BitFlare will not be accessed properly. Use the keys shown at the bottom of the screen to move the CD device to the top of the boot sequence list provided. This will not affect the performance of the computer in the future, because if no bootable CD is found, it will boot from the next device on the list (i.e., the hard drive).

When the boot order is correct, press the key indicated to "Save and Exit" the BIOS Setup utility. The PC should now restart and boot from the BitFlare CD if present in the CD drive.
